Set Design by Sarah Webster
This opera is set in 1830 in the countryside of Chamounix then moves to an apartment in Paris at the height of wealth of fashion. The winter opera is usually the biggest production of the year at UNCSA School of Design and Production. I was given this show to Props Direct in my final year of my MFA. During this same semester I was also the Prop Shop Manager and the Inventory Manager while also writing and building my thesis project. I had two assistants for the opera and a lead artisan who helped to draft and build the custom chairs and tables as well as the two wheelbarrows in the show. With another 30 artisans at my disposal in the shop, some of our biggest projects were the Hurdy Gurdy build, the large drapery and upholstery projects for the Parisian apartment, the custom painted 12ft. By 19ft. Carpet, a custom portrait of a major donor, and the wheelbarrows full of vegetables and food for a big countryside feast.
