People Don’t Die in the Comics Anymore

Off-Switch, Captain Spectacular sketch

I worked as the Art Director and Props Master for the independent film, People Don’t Die in the Comics Anymore with Remember Tommy Studios and director Austin Lewis.

The film takes place in a world where suicide is quickly becoming socially acceptable due to the creation of assisted suicide devices called Off-Switches. These devices are surgically implanted into a person’s neck and when they spoke the command word, the light would go off and they would die, thereby controlling their own life and death.

The main character is a filmaker who tries to create a documentary framed against the creators of the Off-Switch, VitaCorp, while dealing with the grief of losing his friend to suicide. He imagined this friend following him around dressed like his favorite superhero, Captain Spectacular.

Off-Switch
I was responsible for creating the Off-Switches for the various characters encountered. I wired these devices so that the battery would sit either under the person’s collar or under their hair then taped and covereed the wires. They were shaped like the Vitacorp “V” logo and had an LED in the center.

Captain Spectacular
I created the character design idea for Captain Spectacular. It was heavily based on Superman, so at this point in the design only the letters and colors were really changed.
